Understanding Price Terminology

Funeral prices are broken down into three categories, each of which goes into calculating the overall cost of a funeral.  At the conclusion of your arrangement conference with the funeral director, you will be provided a "Statement of Funeral Goods & Services Selected" which outlines each selection your family has made to arrive at the overall cost of the funeral or memorial.

To better help families understand these categories before you come into the funeral home to make arrangements, we've provided explanations below:

Professional Services

This includes the professional and technical services of our staff, use of our facilities, equipment and professional funeral automobiles, along with access to our professional networks and personal support throughout the process.

Merchandise Items

These are things such as caskets, urns, alternative cremation containers, outer burial containers, memorial stationary and other tangible goods we sell you. Certain merchandise items are subject to applicable PA sales tax.

Cash Advance Items

These are things that we procure and/or pay for on your behalf ahead of the service and include on your statement.

Cash advances may include items such as certified death certificates, cemetery charges, paid obituary notices, honorariums to pastors and/or musicians, flowers, etc.

Our funeral home's policy prohibits us from adding a markup to items disclosed as cash advances. As such, the items in this category will be billed exactly as what you would pay if you were obtaining these items directly.

However, since the exact amounts of cash advance items (especially obituaries) can be unknown at the time of the arrangement, we will put a good faith estimate on your Statement of Funeral Goods & Services and then send a finalized accounting of this portion of your statement which may include a refund from the funeral home or a small balance due from your family, depending on the final cost of these items.

The accurate cost of a funeral or memorial is arrived at when the total of all three categories are combined.

When comparing pricing between funeral homes or cremation providers, we encourage you to look at the whole picture and not just the lowest advertised price. Each funeral is unique and we encourage you to come in to visit with us to make your personalized selections to arrive at the most reasonable estimate possible before the need arises.

Payment Arrangements

To lose someone you love is a devastating human experience and we understand that loss can also be financially challenging. It is frequently traumatic and can seriously impact judgement at a time when survivors are least prepared financially. We believe in the importance of ritual and celebrating a life that has been lived and will assist in an appropriate service to meet your individual needs.

Davenport Funeral Service strives to never turn away a family based on their ability to pay. We simply ask for your frankness regarding financial matters and pledge that we will work with you, to the best of our ability, to arrive at terms that are fair and amicable to all involved.

It is also important to be realistic in respect to funeral expenses, keeping within your family’s budget while still honoring your wishes. In order to be fair to all parties, provisions for payment are due at the time of arrangement.

We offer multiple payment options to meet your family's individual financial needs, including

Cash or Check

Major Credit Cards (Add 3% for card processing fees)

Pre-Paid Funeral Contract

This is the easiest and most cost-efficient way to pay for final expenses. Typically, a person will meet with a funeral director, provide statistical and obituary information and select merchandise. A file will be created, and monies will be either placed in an irrevocable burial account or a paid up life insurance policy. If a consumer does already own life insurance, it can be transferred to the funeral home as consideration of payment. More information is available by calling our funeral home to make an appointment for a no-obligation meeting.

Assignment of a Verified Life Insurance Policy

A 3.5% fee may apply, as life insurance claims often require additional time and resources for our firm to complete.

Many people have life insurance policies and with the beneficiary's consent, the policy can be used to pay for all funeral related services provided by our funeral home. This form of payment allows the purchaser to use the proceeds of the insurance policy to cover the cost of the funeral without spending out of pocket. The funeral home will obtain the necessary forms which will be signed by the beneficiary. These forms will be sent to the insurance company along with a funeral bill. By indicating that the funeral bill be paid from insurance proceeds, the insurance company will pay the total funeral bill from the insurance benefits, with the remaining amount being returned directly to the listed beneficiary.

Online Payments Via Our Website

Family and friends can make payments directly to a loved one's funeral bill via our online payment portal.

Alternative Payment Options

Our goal is to meet the needs of 100% of the families who seek our support. We respect the dignity of those we serve and ask that if you are dealing with limited funds, please let us know. We can help you tailor selections to meet your financial needs and offer alternative payment options for families who are unable to fund funeral expenses via any other payment method. Please give us a call to discuss your family's individual needs.

We regret that we are unable to accept the settlement of an estate through an attorney or via probate court as payment.
